| I dont get it. Why do people even bother with Halle Berry and why make a big deal? If these people are seen greater by Hollywood, so be it. Why do you take Hollywood so seriously? You should know how beautiful you are , on your own. You dont need a television to tell you that. What are you going to beg a bunch of people who aren't even 'black' to think that 'black' females are really beautiful. That's a funny thing. And what if they think you are beautiful. Then you are going to call them 'sexist' then. It's an ongoing cycle, that only you must stop. The only way to stop it, is to start within yourself. If you truly think that you are beautiul, you won't have a problem with other people who think that you are not. |

Honestly speaking, "The Pretty People" know who they are. These females have encountered validation of their beauty since birth. They can be pale, tan, yellow, brown, dark brown or black complexioned, when you are hot you hot.
Yeah of course, some have that ugly duckling phase, but by high school and/or college they come to full maturity. None of my friends in the old neighborhood nor myself have ever approached someone that was hot who was dark or brown complexioned and have them in utter shock that we would give them the time of day.
Granted most of these females don't have the Hollywood Actor lookalikes which helps re-enforce and further validate their African American beauty but they have heard from family, friends, neighbors, class mates, co-workers and teachers that they should be models, or actresses or that they have a unique look.
Many people don't look to Hollywood to validate or reflect their beauty but instead to Bedstuy, or Harlem, or Watts, Chicago's south side or Hilton Head. Hollywood has Halle Berry, but Windsor High School had Bowlegged Tanisha and she knew she was God's Gift, God bless her. |

Certain black women who look more sub Saharan African which they inherited from their parents or parent and family don't like their looks. So not every African American female is happy about seeing a Vanessa Williams who inherited her looks from her parents. |

The reason is partially because they keep claiming Vanessa Williams to be one of them (African American), when they don't have to claim her. The law does not force legally any more African Americans to claim men and women who look like Vanessa Williams. The ODR law was removed in 1967, so why do they keep claiming Vanessa and mixed people thus adding on purpose to their pain. |

You need to take your own advice. Vanessa Williams is a self-declared Black woman, so perhaps you (and the author of this article) should respect her identity choice by focusing your "claiming" comments elsewhere.
Now feel free to provide direct quotes from Vanessa in which she indicates that she is being "claimed" as Black despie her wishes.
Are White people who call Jennifer Beals and Wentworth Miller "Whites" claiming them? Maybe they just see them as "White" people. It makes perfect sense to me for Black people to see Vanessa Williams and Halle Berry as Black women. |

How can science take responsibility for a social construct?
Should everyone get tested and claim percentages instead of race?
If you don't want to identify as African American, Native American, East Indian, Caucasian or any of the other "races", Don't. It's 2008 you determine who you are. |

Onlyhuman, I agree with you.
There are also extremely unattractive women with HIGH self-esteem. They are so overconfident it's unreal. Some are even conceited when they're nothing special to look at.
My belief is that it either comes from insecurity or being validated all their lives by other people.
My cousin doesn't look like she could be related to me. She is dark-skinned with a sort of swarthy Indian/Latino complexion, curly hair, and is extremely overweight. She literally weighs nearly 300 lbs. She is NOT a nice person. Yet she was the one who constantly received praise and compliments throughout our lives. She was considered the "pretty" one, the "beautiful" one, the darling of the family. |
